Ruan Cowley – KNUTH

Modernizing legacy without losing it

Leadership across continents requires more than a clear strategy. It requires the ability to understand people, adapt to changing circumstances, and create an environment where teams can perform at their best. For Ruan Cowley, leadership is rooted in clarity, accountability and trust. His approach has been shaped by years of operating across different industries, markets and cultures, where navigating complexity and turning challenges into opportunities became central to how he leads. At its core, however, his philosophy is simple: a leader must strive to leave every organization, team and person he works with stronger than he found them – creating opportunities for people to grow, empowering them to contribute, and building something that can continue to succeed long after his involvement.

Ruan Cowley – KNUTH

Ruan Cowley | KNUTH | President

Founded in Germany in 1923 and now guided by its fourth generation of family ownership, Philip and Kristian Knuth, KNUTH has spent more than a century building its expertise around the needs of its customers. The company has long operated on the principle that its role extends far beyond supplying machines. It is about understanding the challenges customers face, working closely with them to identify what they actually need, and developing solutions that support their operations over the long term. From conventional and CNC machinery to installation, service, maintenance, training and ongoing technical support, KNUTH provides full-scope solutions across the lifecycle of a customer’s needs. This approach reflects a broader commitment to solving industry challenges rather than simply selling equipment, building lasting partnerships and helping customers strengthen their capabilities, improve their operations and achieve their goals. Under Cowley’s leadership and alignment with his team, this longstanding philosophy is being carried forward into a modern global strategy, expanding KNUTH’s ability to provide practical, locally supported solutions while retaining the expertise and values that have defined the company for more than a century.

No two leadership journeys are the same. The way leaders approach challenges, make decisions and guide their teams is shaped by the environments they have worked in, the experiences they have gained and the lessons they have learned along the way. This becomes particularly important when leading an established business, where understanding the foundations of its success is just as important as recognising where it needs to evolve.

For Cowley, effective leadership is about knowing when to preserve what works and when to challenge existing ways of thinking. It requires an appreciation for the people, principles and experience that have built a business, alongside the ability to look ahead and prepare it for what comes next. At KNUTH, this balance is central to the company’s continued development: building on more than a century of engineering heritage while strengthening the business for the demands of a changing global industry.

A foundation rebuilt for growth

Looking at the current state of the industry, KNUTH recognised that sustainable growth would require more than incremental improvements. The focus was on strengthening the foundations of the business – challenging established processes, improving operational efficiency, sharpening accountability and creating greater alignment between teams and the organization’s broader strategic objectives. Rather than pursuing short-term gains, KNUTH focused on building the structure, capability and discipline required to support sustained growth.

The results were significant. Under Cowley’s leadership and help from his team, KNUTH South Africa moved from a challenging financial position to a significantly stronger performance within the same year, delivering substantial growth across revenue and profitability. KNUTH USA also achieved strong year-on-year growth across key performance areas while expanding its footprint through the opening of two new branches in Houston, Texas, and Querétaro, Mexico. For Cowley, however, the significance of these results extends beyond financial performance. They demonstrate what can happen when clear objectives, strong processes and capable people are brought together around a common direction.

For Cowley, strong management is not about having one person with all the answers. It is about bringing together people with different strengths, experience and perspectives, and creating the conditions for those strengths to work together. He deliberately relies on the expertise within his management teams, giving people the space to take ownership of their areas while maintaining clear direction and shared objectives. Each leader brings something different to the table, and Cowley sees that diversity of capability as a strength. His role is to connect those capabilities, remove barriers where necessary and ensure that the team is moving towards the same goal. This approach allows KNUTH to remain locally responsive while maintaining the consistency, standards and strategic direction required across its growing international operations.

“What matters is creating a common foundation built around our values, our standards and how we treat people, while giving local teams the flexibility to operate in a way that works for their market,” says Cowley.

Closer to the customer

With a stronger foundation in place, KNUTH is now focused on expanding its global presence while deepening its connection with the markets it serves. The development of new facilities in Houston and Mexico, alongside further expansion plans in South Africa, forms part of a broader strategy to increase local accessibility and strengthen KNUTH’s ability to support customers where they operate.

For Cowley, growth is not measured simply by the number of markets or locations a business enters. It is about building the capability to serve each market properly. That means being close enough to understand local requirements, having the right people and expertise on the ground, and providing customers with access to machinery, technical knowledge, service and long-term support. By strengthening its local presence, KNUTH can respond more effectively to customer needs while drawing on the resources and expertise of its wider global network.

This is particularly important to Cowley as KNUTH expands into new markets. He believes that global growth must be balanced with a strong understanding of local conditions, rather than applying a single approach everywhere. “There is no universal leadership formula. Every situation and team requires a different approach,” he says.

The same principle applies to how KNUTH operates. Each market brings its own challenges and opportunities, and the company’s expansion strategy is designed to give local teams the capability and flexibility to respond to them while remaining connected to the standards, expertise and values of the global organisation. The goal is straightforward: equip customers locally, support them for the long term and use KNUTH’s global capabilities to help them compete in an increasingly connected world.

Modernizing without losing the core

Another significant factor that leaders in business cannot ignore, is the technological side of things. As the industrial world becomes increasingly digital, with AI, automation, robotics and data transforming how businesses operate, KNUTH has expanded its focus on CNC machining, robotics and advanced automation, showcasing these capabilities at industry events such as IMTS in Chicago.

For a company built on more than a century of engineering expertise and conventional machining, this represents an important evolution. A more than century-old organization is not always eager to rock the boat, particularly when its German heritage is deeply rooted in consistency, precision and proven engineering. Cowley works closely with KNUTH’s fourth-generation leadership in Germany to stay aligned with those values while continuing to push the business forward.

That shift extends beyond the machines themselves. KNUTH is incorporating automation into its own operations, using AI in reporting and analytics, and developing an app that will further integrate AI into its website and customer experience. For Cowley, protecting KNUTH’s legacy has never meant standing still. It means taking the principles that have sustained the company for more than a century and applying them to a rapidly changing industrial world.

“We should never change simply for the sake of change, but we also cannot allow our history to become a reason not to move forward,” he says.

Investing in people for the next century

Underlying every initiative, from restructuring to expansion to modernization, is Cowley’s conviction that strong businesses are built from the inside out. Empowering employees, developing future leaders and holding teams accountable are not separate priorities from growth, in his view. They are what make growth possible. It is a cycle where investment in people strengthens leadership, strong leadership strengthens customer relationships, and those relationships sustain the business for the next generation.

Ruan Cowley – KNUTH

Looking ahead, Cowley, in alignment with KNUTH’s 4th generation leaders, wants KNUTH to be more than a machine tool supplier. He sees the company evolving into a solutions partner that understands its customers’ businesses well enough to support them throughout the life of their equipment, while also contributing to industry-wide conversations about the skills shortage and rising pressure on manufacturers to do more with less. It is an ambitious vision for a company already past its hundredth birthday, but Cowley measures success less by what KNUTH has accomplished than by what it continues to build.

That mindset, more than any single initiative, is what defines his leadership. Restructuring, expansion and modernization are each significant achievements on their own, but for Cowley they are chapters in a longer story about a family-owned company proving it can evolve without losing itself.

“I want KNUTH to remain a company that is relevant not only because of what we have achieved over the past 100 years, but because of what we are contributing to the next 100,” he says.

It is a fitting way to describe a leader whose work looks less like reinvention than translation, carrying a century of trust into whatever the next one demands.
